Make friends near you · how it works

Make friends near you — without the "what's up" spiral.

Adult friendship is mostly a logistics problem. People nearby who fit you exist — you just don't have a way to find them or the activation energy to plan the first hang. Friends? is the entire pipeline: find, match, plan, meet.

Why adult friendship got hard

1 in 5 American adults report no close friends

According to Pew (2024) and the 2023 Surgeon General advisory, loneliness is now a public health emergency — comparable in mortality to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The research says adults want friends; we're just terrible at starting new ones after our 20s. The research page has the full citation stack.

Every existing tool points in a different direction. Dating apps optimize for swipes. Social apps optimize for dwell time. Meetup.com optimizes for RSVPs. None optimize for the thing people actually want: a real friend they meet up with next Tuesday.

What Friends? does

Four things, in order.

  1. Personality first. You take the IPIP-NEO-120 — a real, validated 120-item Big Five test. It takes 15 minutes and produces a 30-facet profile instead of a mood ring.
  2. Proximity filter. Every match is within your chosen radius (default 50 km / ~30 mi). The events engine pulls live things to do within that same radius from five APIs.
  3. AI plans the first hang. When you match, the Friend? AI drafts three candidate hangs — a real venue near both of you, a time, two conversation starters pulled from your facet overlap.
  4. End-to-end encrypted DM. You get a private thread with your match. XChaCha20-Poly1305 + X25519 keys. We can't read it. Neither can a subpoena.

Frequently asked

How do I make friends near me as an adult?

Step 1: take a real personality test (not a fun quiz). Step 2: filter for people within your radius who score well against you. Step 3: have someone or something plan the first hang so you don't stall in small talk. Step 4: meet them in person. Friends? is all four steps in one app.

Is the personality test actually real?

Yes. IPIP-NEO-120 is a public-domain Big Five instrument with 120 items scoring 30 facets across 5 Big Five domains. It's backed by 20+ years of academic validation.

What radius can I set for matching?

5 km up to 200 km. Default is 50 km. We only store city-level coordinates, never a pinpoint — so there's no 'who's near me RIGHT NOW' surface. It's about who's in your city, not who's on your block.

Does Friends? work for introverts?

Especially for introverts. The AI plans the first conversation, so you don't have to. The matching respects facet-level similarity (including introvert–introvert pairings on Excitement-Seeking and Gregariousness) so you're not pushed into extrovert energy you don't want.

Is my location private?

We store the city-level coordinates you explicitly set (you can always change or remove them). We never access continuous GPS. We never show your exact position on any map visible to other members.
